This plain bread crumbs recipe is so easy to make and it can be used for so many things! When it comes to making foods from scratch this is a recipe I prefer to make instead of buying from the grocery store.
I like finding bread sales at the grocery stores because there are so many ways to use bread that is about to go stale. One of those ways is by making bread crumbs.

I personally make bread crumbs myself because I don't like the list of ingredients on the store bought ones or the price. Anyway I can be a little healthier and save a bit of money is a win for me!
It is also a great way to reduce food waste by using up any stale bread you have and it tastes better than store bought bread crumbs as well.

- Casseroles

Is stale bread better for bread crumbs?

What do you need to make this plain bread crumbs recipe?
- Stale bread, preferably
- A zip lock bag
- A rolling pin

How do you make bread crumbs?

1: Cut the crusts off the bread (You can use the crusts to make croutons)

2: Place the bread on the pan.

3: Bake in the oven at 300f for 30 minutes, flipping half way through.

4: Once cooled, place in a zip lock bag and roll over them with the rolling pin until desired size.

5: Place in an air tight container.

Should you use the end pieces?
No, I learnt the hard way the first time I made bread crumbs. The end pieces did not toast fully to be able to smash into crumbs.
Instead I cube the end pieces and use them for homemade croutons. You can also put the end pieces in a freezer bag and keep them there until you are ready to use them at a later time.
I always have a large freezer bag full of end pieces or pieces of homemade bread that was starting to go stale. I can use that for things like croutons, bread pudding and you guessed it...bread crumbs in the future.
Should you use the crusts?
I do not use the crusts, I actually cut off the crusts and cube it for homemade croutons instead.

How to store bread crumbs
Store them in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks at room temperature or in the fridge for up to 3 weeks.
For longer storage freeze them in an airtight container for up to 3 months.
